Meet one of LLTF’s staff members who has shared her story about baby Orla’s early arrival

Meet Jade, our dedicated Marketing and Communications Coordinator, who plays a pivotal role in keeping our communities across Australia socially connected. Jade’s personal journey into motherhood was marked by challenges and triumphs, making her an inspiring member of our team.

Around the 20-week mark of her pregnancy, Jade received the diagnosis of vasa previa, a condition characterized by blood vessels obstructing the cervix. Left undiagnosed, this condition often leads to stillbirth. With her doctor’s vigilance, a caesarean section was scheduled for 35 weeks to ensure both her and the baby’s safety. However, at 32 weeks, Jade experienced an antepartum hemorrhage at home, necessitating immediate medical attention. Despite the unexpected circumstances, Jade was admitted to the Mercy Hospital where, after another hemorrhage two days later, a “code green” was called. Jade underwent a cesarean section under general anesthesia, and about 18 hours later, she met her baby girl, Orla.

Orla was born at 32 weeks, weighing 1.9kg, at the Mercy Hospital. During this challenging time, Jade faced the complexity of balancing care for her 5-year-old daughter at home while managing the NICU stays for Orla. The distance to the hospital, which was 40 minutes away, added another layer of difficulty. Since Jade couldn’t drive due to her surgery, her husband played a crucial role in driving her to the hospital. COVID restrictions meant they could only visit the NICU one at a time, prompting Jade and her husband to alternate their visits to spend time with Orla. Jade even shared moments of skin-to-skin contact while her husband visited their daughter.

Although Life’s Little Treasures Foundation (LLTF) wasn’t able to offer their services at the time due to COVID-related constraints, Jade’s story of strength and resilience resonates deeply with the foundation’s mission.

Today, Orla is a vivacious and spirited 18-month-old, bringing immense joy to Jade’s family. Reflecting on her experience, Jade offers valuable advice to other parents going through similar journeys: embrace the process one day at a time. The NICU journey is seldom straightforward, so celebrate the small victories and take solace in the progress made.

At this year’s Walk for Prems event, Jade will be joined by her husband Conor, their eldest daughter Luna, and the source of their inspiration and joy, Orla.
